Susan Gallagher

MSc(Res), BHlthSc (TCM), L.Ac

I’m a Integrative Medicine Practitioner with over 15 years’ experience. I have been supporting cancer patients for the last 10 years. During this time, I have observed and actively participated in making progress in this field.

My career started in Dublin, Ireland where I qualified as an acupuncturist. After relocating to Sydney, I completed a Bachelor of Health Science in Chinese Medicine, Master’s in Science (Research) and the well-regarded Dr. Vodder manual lymphatic drainage training. I have been a member of the Allied health teams delivering high-quality care to patients in four major Sydney hospitals. In 2023 I relocated to Cork, Ireland and was delighted to join The Lymph Clinic team and have the opportunity to work with oncologist and medical professionals at The Cork Clinic.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe, effective therapy that can be accessed at any time throughout life.

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and are used to stimulate acupoints on various areas of the body in order to promote healing, increase blood circulation, ease pain and balance hormones. It can also be used to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system which effectively improves mood, digestion, and sleep. Finally, acupuncture can be a powerful modality for supporting the immune system and correcting subtle imbalances that precede physical symptoms. Within an acupuncture treatment other tools may be used such as cupping, gua sha or electro-acupuncture to treat larger muscle groups or strengthen a therapeutic effect.

Acupuncture benefits patients with a wide range of disorders, such as:

  • Back, joint and bone pain
  • Muscle aches and injuries
  • Fatigue and insomnia
  • Bloating and reflux
  • Constipation and diarrhoea
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Anxiety, stress and depression
  • Low immunity
  • Hot flushes
  • Neuropathy
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Dry mouth and mouth sores

Oncology Acupuncture

Due to the ever-increasing awareness, research and evidence, acupuncture has become integrated into cancer care and is available globally in most hospitals, hospices and clinics. Acupuncture is used to help alleviated or minimise the side effects of oncology treatment, as well as promote recovery. Susan Gallagher is an Integrative Medicine Practitioner who has been supporting cancer patients for 10 years and has an in-depth understanding of the physical and emotional toll of cancer. Susan uses evidence-based practice to manage the side effects of oncology treatment, support your recovery and help improve your quality of life.

During my treatments I will work on addressing the biological, psychological and spiritual aspects of health and illness unique to each client.

Tailored Care for Each Client: 3 Step Plan

Assessment

I’ll begin your session with a thorough assessment that starts with listening to your story. Then I will ask questions about your medical history, work situation, hobbies, diet, exercise regime and family situation to get a comprehensive picture. This helps me establish the right goals for you and implement the appropriate treatment steps.

Treatment

Once I clearly understand your situation, identify your limitations and establish your goals, I’ll deliver your treatment plan, which may include acupuncture, cupping, electro-acupuncture and auricular-acupuncture. Melding Chinese and Japanese acupuncture, my treatments are very gentle and you will receive the best of care in a peaceful and safe environment.

Maintenance

Some people will require the management of the physical side effects of their cancer treatment on an ongoing basis. Together we will create an ongoing management plan that suits you and your lifestyle. Teaching self-management techniques and providing a range of coping strategies, are all aspects of the maintenance service.
